Pet-Friendly House Cleaning: What to Know Before You Book

Homes with pets have different cleaning needs than homes without them. More hair, more dander, more odor, and more ground-in mess on floors and furniture. A professional cleaning service that understands this — and uses products that are safe for your animals — makes a real difference. Here is everything pet owners should know before booking.

Are Polished Living Cleaning Products Safe for Pets?

Yes. All products we bring to your home are pet-safe and eco-friendly. We do not use harsh bleach-based cleaners or products that leave chemical residues unsafe for animals that walk on floors and lick their paws. If you have a specific sensitivity concern about a product ingredient, let us know at booking and we will discuss what we use and whether an alternative is appropriate.

How Pet Ownership Affects Your Cleaning Needs

Shedding and Hair

Pet hair embeds itself into carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, and even window tracks. It accumulates in corners, under furniture, and along baseboards faster than most people realize. A standard vacuum pass will not get all of it — professional equipment with the right attachments does a significantly more thorough job.

Homes with heavy-shedding breeds (labs, huskies, golden retrievers, German shepherds) typically see hair buildup faster than the cleaning schedule can keep up with at monthly frequency. Biweekly service is usually the right call.

Dander and Allergens

Pet dander is a major allergen source and settles on surfaces, in upholstery, and in HVAC vents. If anyone in your household has pet allergies — or if guests frequently do — regular professional cleaning makes a measurable difference in air quality and surface cleanliness. Deep cleaning, which includes wiping down vent covers and cleaning behind furniture, addresses dander accumulation that routine cleaning misses.

Odor

Pet odor comes from dander, saliva, urine accidents, and the oils in an animal's coat that transfer to surfaces they rest on. Professional cleaning addresses the surfaces where odor accumulates — floors, upholstery contact points, and baseboards — rather than just masking it. Persistent odor from accidents that soaked into flooring or subfloor may require specialized treatment beyond standard cleaning.

Muddy Paws and Tracked-In Dirt

Dogs that go outside bring in whatever the yard or sidewalk has in it. This means floors — especially near entry points — accumulate dirt faster than in pet-free homes. Entry areas, mudrooms, and kitchen floors near back doors typically need more frequent attention.

What to Do With Your Pets During a Cleaning

You do not need to board or remove your pets for a cleaning visit, but a few steps make the visit go more smoothly:

  • Let us know you have pets when booking — so we come prepared with the right equipment and products
  • Secure dogs during the visit if possible — especially if they are protective of the home or easily agitated by new people. A crate, a separate room, or a yard works well.
  • Cats generally self-manage — most cats retreat to a bedroom or quiet area during a cleaning and are not an issue
  • Pick up food and water bowls — so we can clean underneath and around them
  • Put away toys and pet items from the floor — the more clear the floors, the more thoroughly they get cleaned

How Often Should Pet Owners Schedule Cleaning?

  • One dog or cat, low shedding: Biweekly is usually sufficient
  • Multiple pets or heavy shedders: Weekly is recommended
  • Pets with accidents or persistent odor: Start with a deep clean, then maintain biweekly
  • Allergy households with pets: Weekly cleaning plus seasonal deep cleans for vents and upholstery contact points

Should You Start With a Deep Clean?

If your home has not had a professional cleaning in more than a few months, or if there is significant pet hair embedded in carpet and furniture, we recommend starting with a deep clean. This resets the baseline so that subsequent standard cleanings are actually effective at maintaining cleanliness rather than just catching up on buildup.

Deep cleaning starts at $175 and includes inside appliances, baseboards, ceiling fans, window tracks, and more thorough attention to floors and surfaces where pet hair and dander accumulate.

A Note on Florida Pet Owners

Florida's heat and humidity accelerate pet odor and dander buildup, particularly in homes that stay closed up with air conditioning running. Bathrooms, laundry areas, and any room your pets spend significant time in tend to accumulate mildew and odor faster in a humid climate. We recommend a seasonal deep clean at minimum twice a year for Florida pet owners — before and after summer, when conditions are at their worst.
